Lost Dutchman Trail
The Lost Dutchman Trail wanders through the western part of the Superstition Wilderness Area (itself a part of Tonto National Forest). It can be accessed from the North at the Second Water Trailhead, and from the South at the Peralta Trailhead. This trail wanders a lot, with much of it flat. The most significant climbs are near Weaver's Needle (itself a significant sight). The trail is all contained within the Arizona Upland biotic community, and therefore you will find lots of cactus, agave, and scrub brush. There are lots of pretty mesas to see, and Weaver's Needle itself is worth the trip.

Getting there (North trailhead): Follow US 60 East from Phoenix, exiting on Hwy 88 (Idaho Rd), in Apache Junction. Continue on 88 North to the Second Water Trailhead (well marked, just past Lost Dutchman State Park).

Some interesting geology along the trail.

Typical desert scrub brush for this region.

Weaver's Needle is seen in the distance.

The Superstition Mountains are seen in the background. A good view.

An agave plant in bloom. This happens only after the plant has lived for about 25 years, and right after the bloom (and seed production) the plant dies.
Here, a prickly pear is in bloom. Not only pretty, but it will produce that yummy fruit!

This is the web of a wolf spider. Like a little vortex!
